Where to file
As a service member, you can choose to file for divorce in whatever location is best for you based on certain factors. You can choose the state in which you are stationed or the state where you have legal residency. In addition, you can also file in the state where your spouse lives. These options are meant to allow for convenience, depending on your situation.
For example, if you expect to move from the current state soon, you may not want to file there. It may be easier to file in your state of residency.
Considerations
Having a choice of where to file is incredibly beneficial. You will want to consider each option to see which may be most beneficial to you. Think about how each state handles property division and how that could impact you. Also, look into how custody matters usually go in the state if you have kids.
